Brewers announced the acquisition of reliever Jeremy Jeffress and subsequently designated Kirk Nieuwenhuis for assignment. Jeffress won’t arrive in time to be active for tonight’s game however, leaving the Brewers with an open roster spot. The club has filled it by recalling outfielder Keon Broxton:OF Keon Broxton has been recalled from Triple-A @skysox. (OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis designated for assignment yesterday)— Milwaukee Brewers August 1, 2017Broxton, 27, was Milwaukee’s Opening Day starter in center field this season and has had quite the up-and-down year. On the whole he’s hit .218/.294/.430 (83 wRC+) with 14 home runs and 17 stolen bases. His signature aggressive approach lead to a 38% strikeout rate, however, and his walk rate has greatly diminished versus last year https://www.fanmb.com/kolten-wong-jersey. Keon’s defense hasn’t graded out as highly this season in center field, either, and he was in the midst of a 3-for-50 cold streak when he was demoted to AAA on July 22nd Bj Surhoff Jersey. He would ultimately spend the minimum period of 10 days with the Sky Sox after producing a stellar .385/.500/.577 slash (180 wRC+) with a homer and 4 steals in 34 plate appearances.Craig Counsell told reporters that the plan is for Broxton to take over regular playing time in center field:Broxton takes Nieuwenhuis' spot and will get bulk of starts in CF, Counsell said. Would not be surprise to see Brinson sent down tmrw.— Adam McCalvy August 1, 2017Here's the #Brewers lineup for the 1st game of this series of #MILvsStL! #ThisIsMyCrew pic.twitter.com/bKk0CBlrxX— Milwaukee Brewers August 1, 2017That’ll end 23 year old Lewis Brinson’s brief run as the regular center fielder, and as McCalvy suggested, likely means that he’ll be headed back to Colorado Springs when Jeremy Jeffress is ready to report tomorrow. Brinson has looked a bit overmatched during his first trial in the big leagues, appearing in 19 games between two stints and compiling a .111/.245/289 slash across 53 plate appearances while striking out 32% of time time Brett Anderson Jersey. That translates to just a 35 wRC+, though Brinson has slugged a couple of homers, stolen a base, and made some pretty spectacular plays in the outfield.Stearns and co. were reportedly unwilling to part with Brinson in a package for Sonny Gray this summer, but apparently don’t believe that he’s ready for regular playing time against big league pitching. At the very least, we can expect him to return to the big leagues when rosters expand in September.Statistics courtesy of Fangraphs

low points of the season on Tuesday when they saw their second-best pitcher go down with an injury and only mustered two hits against the Braves, got an injection of positive vibes early Wednesday when Marcus Stroman was revealed to have a clean MRI. Those good vibes were even further boosted by the return of Michael Conforto to the lineup that evening. Still, there was reason to be wary about the game, as Tylor Megill was making the first start of his career and the team without many relievers available in the bullpen. It seemed like a nearly impossible game for the Mets to pitch their way through New York Mets Jerseys.Except Megill made it work. He took the hill and https://www.nymgear.com/aaron-loup-jersey, while he wasn’t spectacular, the effort he put forth was nothing short of admirable. He held the Braves scoreless for the first four innings, only allowing two soft singles to Freddie Freeman across those four frames.Meanwhile, the impact of Conforto’s return to the lineup was felt instantly. After Francisco Lindor walked in the first inning, Conforto came up behind him and instantly ripped a double to right field in his first at bat back to put two runners in scoring position for the Mets with only one out. The Mets didn’t get another hit in the inning, but because of Conforto’s double, Lindor was able to score on a wild pitch, and then Conforto scored on a groundout two batters later. The Mets led 2-0 going to the second, and they didn’t stop there. The Mets had struggled to put together crooked numbers for a full week but had just put one up in the first inning, and were primed to do it again in the second against a struggling Kyle Wright. Luis Guillorme doubled off the wall in left field, and two batters later, Jeff McNeil singled him home. Then Lindor followed by ripping one into the seats in right field for his ninth homer of the season. The Mets were up 5-0 at that point and riding high. They rode that lead into the fifth inning, with Megill still out there. Up over 75 pitches and starting to labor, he surrendered a walk and then a two-run blast to Ender Inciarte into the Coca-Cola Corner. He then walked the pitcher and had to be taken out, but he finished with a respectable 4.1 innings pitched in his debut with the two runs allows, 4 punchouts, 2 walks, and 3 hits given up. All in all, it’s about the best the Mets could’ve hoped for.Miguel Castro came on in relief and labored a bit himself trying to get through that fifth, loading the bases with two outs in the process. But he induced a groundout by Abraham Almonte to get through the inning without allowing anything further. In a surprising development, Corey Oswalt, freshly called up today as well, came in for the 6th inning. He instantly gave up a double to Austin Riley, then threw a wild pitch and surrendered infield single to score a run and make it 5-3. It looked like the Oswalt Mets fans had been seeing for years, and the lead the Mets were enjoying appeared to be imminent jeopardy. But Oswalt settled down and got through the sixth without allowing another baserunner.Mets fans could exhale, as Oswalt navigated through his inning, and now it was on to the better relievers for the rest of the game to face the top of the Braves’ lineup. Unfortunately, none of them were available. Not even Seth Lugo.So we got a second inning of Corey Oswalt, this time against the top of the lineup Samuel McWilliams Jersey. And it went...fine! He gave up a hit to Freeman—who had four hits and a walk in the game, because he had gone too long without annoying the Mets—though he was erased and replaced on a fielder’s choice by Ozzie Albies, who got picked off to end the inning. In a near miracle, the Mets had gotten two innings out of Oswalt—whom, you may remember, was outrighted off the 40-man roster over the winter and had gone unclaimed, and been hurt for much of the season—and lived to tell about it. The Mets had even finally added another run in the seventh on a James McCann RBI single to extend the lead to 6-3. Now it was time to hand it off to the better pitchers with an even larger cushion. Except Oswalt came out for a third inning.Yes, Luis Rojas was so desperate for pitching that he tried to nurse Oswalt through 3 innings of relief to nurse a small lead. And it almost worked. Oswalt struck out the first hitter of the eighth, but then allowed another double to Riley and walked Ehire Adrianza. Rojas finally made the move to pull his laboring pitcher and hand it straight to Edwin Díaz for a five-out save.Díaz extricated himself from the jam in the eighth by striking out Pablo Sandoval and getting Ender Inciarte to fly out. The Mets tacked on another run in the top of the 9th on a Lindor RBI single to make it 7-3. Díaz came back out for the ninth and, despite not having his best stuff, sealed the game. There are many losses that are tough-luck losses, but you can consider this a dumb-luck win. The fact that the Mets got 6.2 innings out of Megill and Oswalt and they both only allowed three runs while Díaz and Castro did the rest is one of the most ridiculous outcomes in a season that has had a bunch of ridiculous things happen to the Mets so far. The offense also looked miles ahead of where it was 24 hours ago, with the team putting together 13 hits and 7 runs in their best offensive performance in a while. McNeil, Lindor, and Conforto all combined for 7 hits. The Mets have their hitters back. And they’re still 4 games up in the NL East. They have the day off on Thursday, before welcoming the Phillies for a four game series, including yet another doubleheader on Friday. Birdland,The 2021 season is only a week old. It’s too soon to get excited or worried about anything in particular that has happened. We don’t have enough data to establish trends one way or another. But that doesn’t make the Orioles current performance against the Yankees any less disappointing https://www.baltimoregearshop.com/mickey-jannis-jersey.It’s been a pretty bad showing all-around from the O’s during their time in the Bronx. The offense has scored two total runs, both coming on one swing from Rio Ruiz. Although that was shrouded in good news since it seems that the Orioles are, in fact, allowed to hit home runs. Ruiz was the first member of the team to leave the park this season. That said, the pitching has not been good either. Both Jorge Lopez and Dean Kremer struggled with control and seemed to run out of gas sometime during their second time through the Yankees order. The Orioles won’t be expecting many of their starters to toss seven shutout innings like John Means did on Opening Day, but they will need them to cut down on walks and get through five innings with some regularity https://www.baltimoregearshop.com/chris-davis-jersey. Again, there are no trends yet. Kremer will be better in his next start. Hitters like Trey Mancini, Anthony Santander, and Ryan Mountcastle won’t stay homer-less all season long. Plus, Means is on the bump tonight, and although he may not be a universally-regarded “ace” just yet, it sure feels a lot better when he’s pitching.Links & NotesOrioles home opener to include first pitch from Mayor Brandon Scott; Mo Gaba, front-line workers to be recognized | The Baltimore SunAs bad as the O’s have looked the last two days, you can be excited that tonight’s game is the end of a road trip, and we get to see the team back at Camden Yards tomorrow. It will be neat to see fans back in the stands at the friendly confines.2020-21 MLB International Reviews: Baltimore Orioles | Baseball AmericaThings are looking up internationally for the O’s. This most recent class of signings was an improvement over Mike Elias’s debut class in 2019, and the next class should be better than that as the current Orioles regime establishes a foothold in the region. The development of the training facility in the Dominican Republic can only help.Strikeouts mount as O’s lose again to Yankees | Steve MelewskiThere have been a lot of Orioles strikeouts in this first week of the season https://www.baltimoregearshop.com/travis-lakins-sr-jersey. However, they have also just gone from a frigid few days in Boston to facing the Yankees, where it looked like Jordan Montgomery had everything working and Gerrit Cole is...well, he’s Gerrit Cole. Of course, if the trend continues against all types of pitchers, concerns will mount.Ryan McKenna made it to the majors. Now the Orioles’ outfield prospect wants to stick around. | The Baltimore SunThe Orioles outfield is full of options these days, and that is despite Austin Hays and DJ Stewart sitting on the shelf with matching hamstring injuries. Ryan McKenna looks to have plenty of athleticism to be a useful player on this Orioles team. It’s just a matter of whether he will get enough playing time to show it off. If not, he may be better served to put in work at the alternate site or Norfolk until a bigger role opens up.Orioles birthdaysIs it your birthday? Happy birthday! Ricky Bones turns 52 today. The right-handed pitcher appeared in 30 games for the 1999 Orioles and finished with a 5.98 ERA.The late Tom Phoebus (d. 2019) was born on this day in 1942. The Baltimore native spent five seasons with the hometown team from 1966 through 1970. He pitched to a 3.06 ERA, 107 ERA+, and 6.0 bWAR over those five seasons.Orioles history1873 - John McGraw is born. Although he was never a part of the organization that we currently know as the Baltimore Orioles, McGraw did play third base for the 1890s Orioles before becoming a successful manager of the New York Giants, winning 10 NL titles and three World Series championships. McGraw was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1937.

Star of the GameNick Castellanos hit a 2-run homer rather hard in Thursday’s Opening Day contest against the St. Louis Cardinals, part of a multi-hit day that helped power the Cincinnati Reds offense in a game they ultimately lost. His offensive game kept right on clicking on Saturday, too, as he came to the plate twice and managed to score both times. That’s, uh, burying the lede a bit on my part. While Nick singled and scored his first trip to the plate, he took a fastball to the left arm when in the box the second time Joey Votto Jersey, and it sure didn’t look like a pitch that had slipped. After taking exception to it a bit, he offered the ball back to pitcher Jake Woodford, and after his teammates moved him around the diamond to 3B, he raced home and scored on a head-first slide that just beat a diving Woodford to the plate. Then came the flex that Reds fans won’t soon forget, as Bally Sports Cincinnati relayed:The Reds' and Cardinals' dugouts have emptied after Nick Castellanos scores on a wild pitch. pic.twitter.com/M8sSctUjbo— Bally Sports Cincinnati April 3, 2021Benches cleared, tensions flared, and the Reds/Cardinals rivalry instantly had a shot in its arm that may well require a second dose in four weeks. Anyway, Nick Castellanos might not have been the face of the Reds four hours ago, but he pretty well made that leap today in a drama-packed win for the Reds. Honorable Mentions are due to: a lot of Reds, including Tucker Barnhart for socking a dinger, Tyler Mahle for a rock-solid outing (5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 9 K); Jonathan India for doing absolutely everything; Aristides Aquino for bonking a homer; and Tyler Naquin for ribbying, walking, and taking a plunk.Key PlaysMahle left a meatball over the plate to Paul DeJong in the Top of the 2nd, and DeJong deposited said meatball in the LF seats for a solo homer. Reds trailed, 1-0.The Reds finally got a lead in 2021 in the Bottom of the 3rd. Naquin coaxed a leadoff walk off Adam Wainwright, and Barnhart followed with a 2-run Tuck Job into the seats in right-center. Later, both Jesse Winker and Nick Castellanos poked singles, each moved up a bag on a Barry Larkin Approved Productive Out [TM] by Joey Votto, and that proved large when back to back dinked singles by Eugenio Suarez and Mike Moustakas each drove in additional runs Bronson Arroyo Jersey. The BABIP Gods kept right on smiling with Jonathan India’s infield single down the 3B line to load the bases, and Naquin followed with a 2-run single to keep the pile-on rolling and chase Wainwright to an early shower. Reds led, 6-1.DeJong sauced another Mahle meatball in the Top of the 4th, though it was once again fortunately just of the solo variety. Reds led, 6-2.Nick Castellanos was plunked by an inside heater from Jake Woodford in the Bottom of the 4th, and his reaction to it was rather entertaining to behold. A Votto single and Suarez walk later loaded the bases, and a wild pitch led to Castellanos flying home and sliding in under the tag/tackle. Castellanos flexed on Woodford, chaos ensued, the benches cleared at least twice, it’s still a damn pandemic with one MLB in quarantine with games postponed, and did I mention chaos ensued? Anyway, Castellanos ended up ejected and Woodford eventually was back on the mound to walk Moose to re-load the bases, and he hit India with a breaking ball on the elbow to drive in another Reds run. Reds led, 8-2, after an inning I’m sure both sides will quickly forget and move on from.Mahle’s day ended on a laser of a single into LF from Nolan Arenado that led off the Top of the 6th, and Cam Bedrosian came on to relieve him. A walk followed, but what would’ve been the final out of the inning ended up kicking off the glove of Aristides Aquino in LF for an error, a ball he dropped while fighting a vicious sun at that time of the day. Arenado scored, and the Reds held an 8-3 lead.Aquino got that run right back, though, blasting an Andrew Miller meatwad way the heck over the LF wall, a laser that flew off the bat at an absurd 112 mph. Reds led, 9-3.Cionel Perez was electric for a time on the mound, but he exited with 1-out in the Top of the 8th after allowing a walk and a single. Sean Doolittle came on to clean up the damage, but after a walk to Yadier Molina loaded the bases, a Dylan Carlson flyout to RF allowed DeJong to tag and score. That would-be rally ended there, however, and the Reds held a 9-4 lead.Sal Romano was given the task of wrapping things in the 9th, and that admittedly came against the heart of the Cardinals order. That didn’t go so well, as Romano walked Paul Goldschmidt before Arenado smacked a 2-run tater into the LF seats to make it 9-6. That, though is how this eventful game would finally end.Tony GraphaninoSource: FanGraphsOther NotesSomehow, Nick Castellanos was the only player ejected after the 4th inning fracas, which is completely ridiculous.Jay Bruce is no longer on the Cincinnati Reds, but today marked his 34th birthday. He chipped in with a snazzy defensive play at 1B for the New York Yankees and even added a 2-ribbie single Nick Castellanos Jersey. Happy birthday, Jay!The Reds got at least one hit from every spot in the order except 9th on the day.Tomorrow will see the Reds and Cardinals wrap their series, and it’ll mark the official Reds debut of righty Jeff Hoffman. He’ll be countered by veteran righty Carlos Martinez of St. Louis, with first pitch set for 1:10 PM ET.Tunes.

City Royals put on a patented performance in Game 2 of the World Series on Wednesday night in a 7-1 victory over the New York Mets, taking a two games to none lead in the best-of-seven Fall Classic.Kansas City rallied for four runs in the fifth inning, a frame that saw Jacob deGrom finally crack after 3½ starts of brilliance so far this postseason. A walk and five singles turned a one-run deficit into a three-run lead for the Royals, who improved to 7-1 at Kauffman Stadium in Kasas City this postseason. The big blow came from Eric Hosmer, whose two-run single broke a 1-1 tie. Hosmer, who delivered the game-winning sacrifice fly in Tuesday night's marathon Game 1, was 2-for-4 on the night, and has driven in four runs and reached base four times in the first two games of the series. It was a total team effort on offense for the Royals, who got two hits, including a triple, from shortstop Alcides Escobar, who drove in two and now has 20 hits in 13 postseason games this year. Mike Moustakas added two hits and a walk, and Alex Gordon doubled and walked twice. The Royals put the game away with three more runs in the eighth inning, giving them a commanding series lead. How important is a 2-0 lead in the World Series?FYI with KC holding a late lead: 53 teams have gone up 2-0 in the World Series, and 42 of those won it (79.2%), including the last nine.— Royals Gameday October 29, 20153 reasons the Royals are up 2-0Cueto was CUETO again. The Royals traded for Johnny Cueto in late July at the non-waiver trade deadline to be the ace they needed, but in his two months with Kansas City he was a rather ordinary 4-7 with a 4.76 ERA in 13 regular season starts. But in the postseason he has been a tale of two pitchers. In his one road start, Cueto allowed eight runs in two innings in Game 3 of the ALCS against the Blue Jays. But in three home starts, Cueto has a 2.74 ERA in three starts, including a complete game in Game 2 on Wednesday night.Cueto struck out four and allowed one run on two hits and three walks. He retired 15 batters in a row until a two-out walk in the ninth. He was the first Royals pitcher to throw a complete game in the postseason since Bret Saberhagen in Game 7 of the 1985 World Series https://www.kcrgear.com/scott-blewett-jersey.Cueto has lasted at least eight innings in each of his last two home starts, also closing out the Astros in Game 5 of the ALDS Jim Sundberg Jersey. He is the only Royals pitcher in the last two postseasons to pitch into the eighth inning, and he has done it twice. His next scheduled start would be Game 6, at home. If the series gets that far.Wearing down deGrom. Mets Game 2 starter deGrom has been fantastic this postseason https://www.kcrgear.com/michael-a-taylor-jersey, entering Wednesday with three wins in three starts to go with 27 strikeouts and just five walks in 20 innings, and a 1.80 ERA. He allowed five hits, six hits and four hits in his three previous playoff starts. All three of those were on the road, which game deGrom a chance at a record on Wednesday night:No pitcher in baseball history has won four road games in one postseason. Jacob deGrom has that chance tonight.— Peter Botte October 29, 2015The Royals had five hits in the fifth inning alone on Wednesday night, when deGrom was missing over the heart of the plate repeatedly. The 34-pitch frame ended his night, and his chance at the record. The big inning. That fateful fifth inning was just the latest long rally for a relentless Royals lineup this postseason. In 13 games this postseason, the Royals have scored at least three runs in an inning 10 times, and have scored multiple runs in an inning 18 times. All that has added up to 75 runs in 13 games for the Royals, an average of 5.77 runs per game on offense. That has the Royals two wins away from their first World Series title since 1985.The World Series shifts to New York with a travel day on Thursday, followed by Game 3 from Citi Field on Friday night, with Yordano Ventura starting for the Royals and Noah Syndergaard for the Mets.

supposed to be a strength. Clint Frazier had a fantastic breakout campaign in 2020, slashing .267/.394/.511 with 8 homers in 39 games, finally putting that prodigious bat speed to good use. Meanwhile, Aaron Hicks posted a 120 OPS+ despite having limited power, thanks to his immense walk rate that gave him a .379 OBP; a year removed from Tommy John surgery, nobody would have been surprised if his power returned in a big way. And then, of course, there’s Aaron Judge, whose only concern was whether he would be able to stay on the field Brett Gardner Jersey. There were concerns all around, certainly, but there was also immense reason for optimism.Judge has, so far, remained healthy, but literally nothing else has gone well. Hicks struggled to the tune of a 74 OPS+ before undergoing season-ending surgery in May to repair a torn tendon sheath in his left wrist. Frazier similarly struggled, lost the starting left field job to Miguel Andújar, and then hit the injured list with possible vertigo and vision issues. Vertigo was at least ruled out recently, but given his concussion history, it’s not far-fetched to wonder if his season, and even his career, could be in jeopardy.Andújar, for his part, has put together some good stretches, but the lows have put him at a .667OPS (83 OPS+) for the year, he’s been a bit of an adventure in left field — and did I mention he’s on the injured list, too? Brett Gardner, re-signed to be a fourth outfielder, looks lost at the plate half the time, and the recently-acquired Tim Locastro’s career 78 OPS+ is probably not the answer, either.Enter Joey Gallo. The two-time All-Star outfielder is the biggest piece of trade bait that the last-place Texas Rangers have available to cast, and boy, would he look good in pinstripes. This is Gallo’s hit chart for the 2021 season, superimposed on the outline of Yankee Stadium’s dimensions. According to Statcast, he would have four more home runs this season were he playing in the Bronx and not Globe Life Field in Arlington, and judging from the graphic, there are at least two other hits that would come close. Additionally, his left-handed swing is tailor-made for Yankee Stadium — he pulls the ball 40 percent of the time, and all but 8 of those hypothetical 28 home runs would go to right field. The biggest knock against Gallo is that he strikes out too much. Frankly, I don’t care — when you’re pace for 40 homers and are working walks slightly more than 20 percent of the time (the most in the league), even a 30-percent strikeout rate won’t matter. How do I know that? Because that’s exactly what Gallo is doing this year, and he’s slashing .239/.402/.522, good for a 153 wRC+. That figure ranks eighth-best in baseball and better than anybody on the Yankees — even Judge! But let’s pretend for a second that I did care about the punchouts. Well, as Josh noted in his breakdown of the Rangers as a potential trade partner, Gallo is walking at a career-high rate and striking out at a career-low rate. Even better, he’s chasing only 19.8 percent of the time, in the league’s 91st percentile. In short, his plate discipline — which has typically been a point of Gallo criticism — has been an immense strength for him this season.Even better, Gallo has absolutely exploded since the first foreign substance memo went out on June 3rd. Before that date, he posted a .208/.358/.383 slash (111 wRC+) with a 34.1-percent strikeout rate and 17.7-percent walk rate, in addition to mashing only nine long balls and accruing 1.1 WAR. Since that date? Gallo has slashed https://www.nyygear.com/rougned-odor-jersey.301/.480/.796 (231 wRC+) while homered once every other game; moreover, his strikeout percentage dropped to 24.8 percent and his walk rate increased to 25.6 percent — in other words, in the last month, this strikeout-prone batter has walked more than he’s struck out!Defensively, the 2020 Gold Glove winner is one of the best in the league, and his 5 Outs Above Average this season are tied with seven others for sixth in the rankings. He’s exclusively played right field this season, but he not only has experience in both left and center, he’s succeeded there — he’s been about league-average at both positions according to OAA, Defensive Runs Saved, and UZR/150. And the Yankees could conceivably use him at either position — like I mentioned above, the team has glaring holes at both spots. As Gallo is under contract for the 2022 season, Gallo is going to cost a lot — probably more than Brian Cashman is willing to part with Jonathan Loaisiga Jersey, if we’re being honest. It’s also worth noting that there’s no guarantee that Texas is even going to want to trade him; they may instead lock him up for a long time. If he is truly available, however, then the Yankees need to go all-in. Whether or not he’d be enough to propel the Yankees to a playoff spot this year is up for debate, but as a move with 2022 in mind, there’s arguably no one better on the market this July.
