Before reading this review, let's give you a spoiler that Legacies doesn't match up to the level of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. However, if you still want to read this review, consider doing something else.
Legacies on the CW is the latest spin-off from both The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. However, three seasons in, it's evident the program doesn't have the same cult following as its two predecessors.
So why hasn't the show gained the same traction?
Legacies, an adolescent supernatural soap that premiered in 2018, is a spin-off of The Originals, which was itself a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries, with the characters from both shows interacting and connecting as part of the same overlapping fictitious universe.
Despite its canon connections to both prior shows, Legacies had so far failed to match either The Vampire Diaries' smash-hit crossover success or The Originals' more moderate influence.
Legacies received worse ratings and reviews than the two previous shows, causing many viewers and critics to wonder what went wrong with The Originals' spinoff. There are several reasons why Legacies isn't doing as well as The Vampire Diaries or The Originals, each of which have their own issues.
Given the popularity of The Vampire Diaries universe, it's difficult to understand why Legacies, which has been set up for success, hasn't achieved the same level of success.
Season 4 of Legacies may be the final season of the supernatural series; the spinoff has unable to gain traction in the same manner that The Vampire Diaries and even its less-popular spinoff The Originals did.
Legacies' first two seasons received worse ratings than every season of The Vampire Diaries and just two of the five seasons of The Originals. The failure of Legacies to have the same effect as its predecessors might easily be attributed to viewer fatigue, as the spin-off of the spin-off will never feel as fresh or imaginative as the original.
Legacies has always felt more lighthearted than both of its predecessors, which is a dilemma because to the series' setting at the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted. Granted, the characters in The Vampire Diaries were also in high school (or ageless in the case of TVD's vampires) when the show first aired, but the show made it apparent that the cast was frequently in grave danger, and as a whole, the show was a success.
Since season one, Legacies has provided an innovative twist on the concept of both The Originals and The Vampire Diaries. Legacies, like its predecessors, contains a number of overarching series-length arcs, with stories like Hope and Landon's love spanning the three seasons.
Legacies, unlike The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, has also used a "monster of the week" approach, which is more akin to Buffy The Vampire Slayer than The Vampire Diaries, such as Legacies' strange Darth Vader monster.
Legacies failed to follow The Vampire Diaries' lead and develop out the tales of supporting characters beyond the major love triangle during the first two seasons, focusing on Hope and Landon's romance at the expense of the rest of the ensemble.
As a result, Hope and Landon's interaction, which began as an intriguing inversion of gender tropes in which she was the aggressive rescuer and he was the passive male in distress, has grown monotonous for viewers who are tired of the two garnering the majority of the show's emphasis and screen time.
