128 players simultaneously running into Battlefield 2042’s crowded warzones is a great example of why bigger can be better, but isn’t always. While chaotic gunfights are undoubtedly part of Battlefield’s charm, massive lobbies with that many players eventually became frustrating instead of fun – even in the limited time I was able to play during a three-day "virtual review event" held by EA earlier this week.
Thankfully, its tense new Hazard Zone mode provides an interesting strategic alternative on a smaller scale, and its customizable Portal mode tools are an exciting glimpse at how its future could thrive. But 2042’s flashy, large-scale battles have left me wanting so far – but I have a ways to go before I'm ready to score it.
For PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X owners, the player count has doubled from 64 to 128, and the maps are built to a truly unprecedented scale to accommodate. You are confronted by the impact of these innovations immediately, as your customizable Specialist is air-lifted into one of the seven purpose-built combat zones. As you prepare to engage in the sort of physics-driven carnage that Battlefield is so famous for engineering, it's difficult not to get lost in the spectacle of it all.
When Battlefield 2042 early access starts this Friday for EA Play Pro subscribers and owners of the special editions, the servers will in all likelihood fill up with teenagers whose bone marrow has evolved to produce headshots in Battlefield games. My current K/D ratio won't survive, but I'll need to brave those live servers to get more experience with each mode before I publish my final review next week. It's also possible that bugs or server problems that I didn't notice during these sessions ruin the fun.
Not so much of a fan of Conquest, though. This mode sees the entire map filled with zones that both sides must fight to capture and hold. This is Battlefield 2042 as a sandbox, with less structure and more responsibility on your shoulders. For our squad at least, fun wasn’t as readily available in this mode. Unlike Breakthrough, teams aren’t all part of a hivemind, but splintered into squads very much doing their own thing.
